What is Neurofeedback?

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, otherwise known as EEG biofeedback trains the brain to function more efficiently. Every sensation, thought or emotion felt is due to the firing of neurons. With neurofeedback we give the information back to the person and reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns.

This allows the brain to regulate the nervous system at an optimal level. Medication regulating brain function might be decreased after successful neurofeedback or be needed at a lower dosage. Anyone taking prescription medication needs to clearly communicate this to their prescribing physician in order to continue treatment at the most effective dosage.

The process of Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive process. During a session 4 electrodes are placed on the scalp with electrode paste. The electrodes simply measure the electrical output of the brain. Each client watches a movie or plays a game through the neurofeedback software. The goal is for the client to stay in the more desirable training zone. Once in this zone he/she will be rewarded by an enlarged TV screen and a brighter picture to name a few. When the brain moves out of the optimum zone the screen will shrink and get foggy. The brain is able to subconsciously make adjustments to return to the training zone. Eventually the brain will become more flexible thus causing the nervous system to be more resilient.

How many sessions will I need?

Each situation is different and not everyone benefits from treatment in the same way. A minimum of 20 sessions is recommended. In some cases a client can require up to 40 sessions, depending on their situation. Sessions are generally spread over an 8 week period, 2 – 3 sessions per week. The effects of neurofeedback have shown to be long lasting, however certain situations may require a maintenance session to maintain the progress made by initial treatment.
